Sunrise Chip 'n Ranch aka Johnny's

12 March 2009

Sunrise/Johnny's is most likely the stalwart hangout for bunny chows and rotis in Durban. This hole in the wall (literally) is buzzing till the wee hours of the morning and is a traditional stopover on the way home after a long night out on the town.

These guys specialise in rotis that could sink a ship (see image below) and their triple chip and cheese roti (with mutton gravy!) is probably their most famous 'dish' - you might just regret it later but it tastes flippen good!

I can remember back in the early 90's, working around the corner, when I could purchase a sugar beans bunny for 95 cents. Was pretty much all the money I had in my pocket back in those days! Johnny’s has been around since the 80’s serving folks from all walks of life, from local celebs to 'outies' having a tussle outside.

They're also known to have the best slap chips in town.

The 'triple' part of the name is from the amount of cheese included in the roti, but there's definitely more than enough for three to share. This "thripple chip n cheese" is a surefire legend.
Great site. :)

Trust me, their chow only tastes good in the wee hours of the morning because their customers are drunk; have you ever ate their food while sober? It's cr#p. And whatever happened to all the stray cats that used to roam the ares around Sunrise? Hey, I'm just saying/

Whatkind, Naeem - if Deepak heard that he'd klap you to the floor, outie!

I chow Sunrise at least once a week and I can honestly say it's the best value for money you can find in Durban, and trust me, I chow roti and bunny everywhere. If you want the real taste experience, don't be a muppet and order the chip, cheese and gravy option like every other unimaginative customer. The secret is to ask what curries they have in the bain maries: usually they have at least four or five freshly-made curried that can be anything from yellow potato and green herbs, mushroom and spinach, dhall and brinjal or...you get the picture.

By far the best value, always a tasty meal and despite what the naaiers say, never been sick from anything I chow there.
