The Full Monty!

21 August 2009

Someone in the office said we should try Silverani's for a good bunny. Last time i went to Silverani's it was on Silverton Rd, that's how I thought it got its name. Turns out there are two Silverani's now, one still on Silverton and one at Suncoast. We haven't been to the Suncoast spot but had a real treat of a bunny on Silverton Rd.

The hospitality was superb and in fact, somewhat strange. It's weird to hear an Afrikaaner talking with a half Indian accent. I thought the owner was from Sweden or Germany but he's from the Karoo and his wife from Durbs. Together they bought the restaurant and, with a few unexpected surprises, have managed to make a go of it. I think they celebrated their one year anniversary recently.

I loved being able to sit at a table and have the full service on a bunny chow. I've always thought that the sit-down price and the take-away price should be the same 'cos if you sat there you would probably buy drinks, side orders etc. Anyway, they certainly delivered the goods as far as the bunny went. These guys are in demand with a regular big order going out to Westvile every Friday (Westville really does need a few more good bunny places!)

We tried the quarter chicken, lamb and broad beans which were all delicious. A tad salty on the chicken but oh so tender. The lamb melted in the mouth and was very tasty. A fair size bunny, pickles served on the side and a lekker vibe. Last time I was at Silverani's I tried the trotters which I realised was an acquired taste and not quite for me. This time, when the owner said that he often did a tripe bunny, my adventurous palette took over and I couldnt resist. We tried a small dish of tripe with our bunnies just to taste. Flip it was good. Lekker gravy, like a bean's gravy with tender tripe (and that's a relative term for tripe). Look, I wouldn't choose it over the lamb but it wasn't bad. The last tripe I tried was at Umlazi Mega City and it looked like a Japenese science experiment gone wrong, with black tentacles and stuff. This kinda restored the humble dish a bit.

The owner treated us to the meal which was pretty sweet as keeping this website running has cost us quite a bit in bunny bucks every week. We had already compared notes and written our review so this was a bonus for us.

On that note, please feel free to donate some cash for us to buy some bunnies... we can quite easily upload a Paypal button.
