The Bunny Frontier Stops Here! 15 January 2010
Runners-up in the Coca-Cola® Bunny Chow Barometer competition in 2008 and the winners in 2009, this outlet certainly (and finally - after all the requests) deserved a visit from us!
Anben Thulkanum, the owner of the Sasol Shop in Mount Edgecombe has a rather different setup to the regular Sasol Shops we've been into around town - he sells bunny chows. He's been running the service station for three years now and what used to be an Xcel service station with a convenience store is now a 24 hour bunny-stop franchised Sasol Shop.
Anben, his wife and Jenny (and her hardworking kitchen colleagues) have been giving the chaps over at Coconut Grove a bit of a klap. A lot of the o's that used to grab a bunny or burger at Lugs, before pressing on home to Phoenix after a night on the town, are now keeping the best till last and popping in at this outlet for their late night munchies instead.
We arrived at lunchtime by invitation (nice one!) and Anben called us into his office, asked us if we'd like something to drink and closed the door. OK, and the bunnies? We first had a great chat about his establishment and how and why he has the much sought after winner's title for the popular Bunny Chow Barometer. Dedication. Our order was placed and we tried to make up our minds whether to sit in the shop (a few tables), outside on the forecourt (err, perhaps not) - or next to the shop, under a thatched umbrella, on some grass. Not a heck lot of seating mentioned Anben, but at least a choice.
The bunnies were flippen epic. Spicy (not hot though), flavourful, and more than filling - and the radish in the sambals made a change. The price on the ¼ mixed veg was a bit steep (R18-00) but one can understand that these guys are a 'convenience store' and prices at these spots are always more than the average take-away or café, so the oil giants can get their 10%. ¼ Chicken (Cornish) and ¼ Mutton were R30.00 and R33.00.
When we'd filled out our scorecards and put them together, we had a unanimous score of 18/25. 4/5 for taste and size. The staff were friendly and it's always a bonus when one can see over the counter into the kitchen/cooking area. Plenty of serviettes but they could have left out the knives and forks, we do know how to eat a bunny.
Oh yes! There's quite the car wash and all outside (see last image below) - a good idea while you're inside chomping your bunny. All the best for the next BCB guys and lady guys!
