Who's in da house!

13 October 2009

I've often passed Pillay's House of Bunnies on my way to the office but I must admit that I'm not one to have bunnies for breakfast. OK, maybe I would, but the main reason in this case is because I am rarely on time for work!

This time, however, I was dropping off one the laaities at home after school and it was lunchtime. Oh joy! I scooted past the store and hit brakes, did a U-Turn in a one way road... now was my opportune moment.

Poen Pillay and his family have been running the take-away come café for 8 years. Sadly, his wife passed away in June but he has done her proud by taking over the cooking and 'even makes his own masala'. His daughter has since stepped in to help by serving the customers. Previously around the corner, they are now at the bottom end of Moore Road near all the funeral parlours. The lack of parking is a big problem, if you don't have a Vespa. Apart from the groovy signwriting on the exterior one-way glass, there's not much to the decor except the regular spaza type burglar bars in front of the counter and the cheesy, overdone "Good food takes time, it's worth waiting for" comment on one of the plain white walls. They have one 4 seater table in the front where two Indian chaps were having a good banter while each chowing their own half bunny. It was interesting to see a half bunny cut across the length of the loaf instead of the width and a 'beans & cheese with mutton gravy' sounded rather grand.

They have the usual selection of bunnies (chicken, mutton, beans) and a few other Indian dishes but the menu is rather limited. No problem, perhaps that's why they call themselves the 'house of bunnies'? Once again, blaming the current financial recession, I ordered the regular... a quarter broad beans. At a good price of R8.50 but I was rather disappointed when I removed the 'virgin' off the top to reveal only a half full of beans, quarter loaf of bread. There could have been a bit more gravy too, rather dry...

We can always harp on about freshness, flavour, size, heat, price etc. but I've always been of the opinion with a bunny chow that if my stomach's full after I've eaten it then it's served it's purpose...

And ask for a flippen serviette 'cos once again you don't get one.
