The Businessman's Bunny
18 April 2009
Tucked away under an interchange on Umgeni Road is the Britannia Hotel. At first glance it looks like either a pomp paleis or a betting parlour. I think it might be both, but one thing for sure is that they serve awesome bunny chows. If you ever have a client come down from up country, this is a good place to go for a bunny that you can put on the credit card and wash down with a few late afternoon drinks.
It's a bit dingy inside the sports bar area, but it has a really good vibe and is packed most lunches, especially Friday. The parking lot is rather small and normally full of Mercs or BM's and if you're lucky you might get a spot on the 'illegal' parking area on the island next to the hotel. With a big screen projector some of the reps catch up with their admin when the cricket is on, with their accountant Charles Glass.
It's a good bunny, a little too hot sometimes at the sacrifice of flavour. We have often thought they used one two too many tomatoes but this is mostly just nitpicking. They serve fine bunnies and have the business coming back for more.

"It's a bit dingy inside the sports bar area..." - damn right about that! I wouldn't support this place again after realising the second time I went there, that the owner of this establishment clearly thrives on the suffering and weakness of gambling and alcohol addicts. And he/she has the audacity to sanctimoniously display a large picture of Sai Baba in the hotel reception area, knowing full-well that philandering spouses also frequent their always-available rooms. Isn't it amazing how the overly-religious people in society get away with murder? That's said, it's best to eat their bunnys on the day the curry is made, otherwise you'll end up with an oil-drenched heart attack-inducing, cholestrol-raising health bomb. A disappointing 4/10, in my opinion.

I have a real problem with the fact that they never seem to have mixed veg curry available - even though its on the menu and they tell you (on every other day of the week) that they make it on mondays and tuesdays, but when you make a mission there there is none... made them lose my custom 3 times and now i wont go there anymore. sad, really.

Moan, moan, moan. Godsakes, some people are hard to please.
The Britannia is the longest operating hotel in Durban, having been open since 1877. That alone should speak volumes of their experience in creating a fine curry. Personally, I highly recommend the quarter chicken. 8/10.

Fantastic quarter mutton bunnies 8/10. On the high side of moderately spicy and always leaves the prickly gooseflesh at the back of your throat. Excellent flavor, decent portions and more than enough salad. There is a seperate restaurant section and a bar with smoking allowed which is the cherry on top for this fine establishment.
