Where to klup a Bunny Chow
We're doing our best to fill this page with reviews on as many worthwhile (open to dispute!) bunny chow establishments as possible. Having klupped over 30 outlets in the Durban area since July 2009, we still have many more to have our say about. There are literally hundreds of outlets out there..!
We have first made the effort to cover all the well-known institutions. Now to find the more obscure and out-of-town outlets and we continue to welcome your efforts and contributions in this endevour.
If you know where the killer bunny (or any for that matter) is hiding then please feel free to share the details with us. We would be stoked to review the outlet if possible. All Quarterbunny® reviews are now rated with a score card and given an average score out of 25. The outlets are scored according to various criteria such as taste, size, price, vibe, cleanliness etc.
We have also enabled comment submissions on each review to make sure we get your honest comments on the outlet in case it was actually goat meat but we got the special treatment.

The Edward, Durban beachfront.
Unfortunately, I now live near Oxford, England, and bunny chows are unknown here, unless I make my own. Still, retiring back to Durbs on Nov 21st 2012, and will hope to get a bunny chow at the Edward. It was never on the menu, but they would make the best mutton bunny ever, all you had to do was ask. I look forward to lots of ideas from this website before coming home. Cheers, and thanks, Doug'O'Durban

Gateway Curries - inside Mistry's Furniture Shop, Umhlanga Ridge (opposite Hirsch's)
As unlikely a spot as this sounds, after extensive scientific daytime research, my cuzzies (actually work colleagues, but that sounds boring) and I have declared this as the "best bunny in Durbs".
We've visited this place so often we should have platinum MVG cards (hint hint), and the opportunity to peruse fine pine furniture while grazing adds to the experience. The shop is unassuming from the outside like all fine bunny spots, and has limited seating.
However none of this matters once the steaming bunny arrives - always promptly and efficiently. A well-balanced, consistently brilliant curry with fresh bread is the simple "e=mc2" for a good bunny, and Gateway Curries delivers this. In the case of the mutton bunny - it has it all - just enough heat, rounded flavour, enough gravy to dip but not too much to make the bread soggy...Accompaniments are in the form of a carrot salad, but don't let it distract you.
For those of us who feel less confident taking on a 1/4 bunny (and this is surprising, as the bunny portion is a perfect size) - the roti's are also great - containing the same curry as the bunny.
Our usual choice is mutton, but the chicken is also great - and if I can bring myself to make friends with a vegetarian - I'm sure they'll agree so are the veggie options.
That's it - check out this unpolished jewel - they seem to keep office hours so keep that in mind. Us platinum MVG bunny-grazers know that when you get the bunny craving - nothing else works.

Ive tried a lot of bunnies from all over the province (and some out of the province) The Orange Freestate experience "bunny" was pretty grim. It consisted of a 1/4 white with a tin of curried fish emptied inside :( Enough to make any outie gag!
One of my favorites in Durbs is Cafe Durban, in Linze Road, Greyville. Theyre actually caterers, and sell to the public as a sideline. Killer Mutton and the chicken is rock n roll. The bread is always fresh and the curry very tasty. They serve a large packet of salad (carrot, onion, cucumber in vinegar) on the side, and all for 24 bucks... well worth it.

Gateway Curries - Mistry's Furniture Shop, Umhlanga Ridge
This is definitely the best place to get a bunny from if you're in the Gateway area. I don't know about the whole of Durban, but I still have to find a place to better it.
Although my favourite bunny is a mutton bunny I still enjoy a beans bunny from them when I'm fasting. All their curries are delicious. Sometimes if I need a quick snack I pop in for a kebab roti. If I had a bigger stomach I would eat as many as I could!

Coconut Grove in Lugs is the BOMB! Nothing can beat sitting on the bonnet of your car klap'n a quarter mutton bunny. The quarter mutton they sell is hot and also tasty- order it with vinegar chillies too. I heard that the grove is a rip off of coconut GROVE (geddit?) but who cares anyway Coconut Grove delivers GREAT food & GREAT atmosphere. What more do u need for a tops bunny experience? Peace out!

Just klapped a quarter mutton from Hollywood - always good, nice bite, just a bit soggy. Meaty muton pieces make the chowing easier. Seven of us just knocked beans and mutton and everyone is looking happy (except for Taryn who ate KFC and is looking much less happy than us I swear).

Haven't experienced a great bunny in Guateng yet but methinks the best bunny in KZN comes from the old Sea Bell hotel in LaMercy. A bit out of the way for Durbanites but well worth the drive...!

In Gauteng - Try any of the Raj Restuarants - its North Indian Cooking not South African and a bit on the expensive side. Also Try The Mistress of Spice in Weltevreden Park, Roodepoort - not too bad. In Centurion - Stay away from the Taj Mahal - poor Helpings, No Salads. There are also places at B.Nagiahs Mall in Midrand which I have not tried yet. I am an ex Durbanite living in Centurion and go crazy looking for Good Bunny Places. In Durbs Brittania still the best - although Service is very slooow.Govenders and Goundens also OK - although quality seems to be dropping during my last few Visits. There is also a place in Springfield - just before the Mosque that sells unusual Bunnies like Methi & Mince Curry - worth a visit

The Curry Leaf Buccleuch Jhb Gauteng
I am a former resident of Durban now residing in Gauteng.

By far the best Goundens on Eaton road of umbilo rd or sydney road is the best by far (You Know it Yushen "post Jul 21st, 2009" ). In all my years eating bunnies the best and only place I will eat a bunny from. Considering there is another govinders less than 300M up the road that doesnt see much bussiness. Goundens is always full shows you that the people have chosen. On a friday you will have to wait for your chow +-1hr but its worth it. Most large tables leave with 2-3 boxes full of bunnies for the poor soals sitting waiting back at the office. Another thing is they are not famouse for anything in particular, what ever you feel like on the day will be exellent. No worries beef, checken, mutton, veg & beans. Anyone else in durbs who thinks they know the best bunny just come and try Goundens firt before you talk. Cheers. Happy chowing:)
