Bunny Chow Barometer Winners 2010

October 2010

Once again, due to public demand (and some rather irritating individuals), here are the WINNERS' RESULTS FOR THE 2010 BUNNY CHOW BAROMETER...

Above all, WELL DONE CAFE INDIA and a round of applause and all to the other winners and runners up! There was a new GOURMET category added this year which was won by Taste of India - who also won 3 other titles!

Now WE just need to be invited to see whether you truly are the 'best' bunnies or not... if our opinion means anything that is...

It's Official!

September 2009

Due to public demand here, finally, are the WINNERS' RESULTS for the 2009 BUNNY CHOW BAROMETER...

Being QuarterBunny®, "the most comprehensive bunny chow website", we had all intentions of being at this bunny lovin' event down at Lugs on the 6 September - but either ended up bundu bashing in the Kruger Park, under house arrest with a mean migraine, or dealing with the loss of a dear mother. But we can at least say that we've 'bean there and done that' and we will soon have the t-shirt. After all, our cool bean Chris Chappe invented the idea back in 2004!

Well done to the winners and runners up! Now we just need an invite from the gas(tro) stations to review their bunnies on our website... As for Some Like It Hot and Taste of India, check out our reviews page... they're definitely a bunny chow to fill up the gas tank!

Design A Bunny | Good Food & Wine Show Durban 23-26 July

28 July 2009

Coconut Grove walked off the undisputed winners at the Good Food & Wine Show's Design A Bunny Competition for their innovative crayfish bunny creation.

Following the organiser's brief to design a gourmet bunny chow, the Moodleys pulled out all the stops in crafting a delectable crayfish bunny that stood out as the clear winner to celeb chefs Reza Mohammed and Cyrus Todiwala who took on the task of judging. One things for certain, if these chefs never heard about the humble bunny chow before their trip to Durban they certainly have now from visiting a bunny outlet to hitting the website to finally judging, I'd say we have left our bunny chow mark on them.

Cyrus even commented that if he liked bunny chows, he would consider putting it on his menu at his posh restaurant, Café Namaste in central London.

Got to keep our ears to the ground to see if this materialises.

QuarterBunny® designer stands up to the heat

24 July 2009

One of our very own quarterbunny.co.za designers, Luke Comins, won hands down at a Chilli Eating Contest held at the recent Portuguese Mariners Food & Wine Festival. This rich and filling feast of food and entertainment is part of the annual Sardine Festival and took place on Port Edward beach on KZN's South Coast from 18-19 July 2009.

Although Luke fired through all three qualifying stages to win 1st place, he was 'officially' awarded 2nd place (even though he clearly finished 5-10 seconds before the 1st place winner!) because he never had his mouth open as a sign of finishing his last mouthful of chillies. He was rather chuffed at the outcome though as he walked away with half the 1st prize money of R500 (thanks Shaun!) as well as the 2nd prize of a hamper.

Just goes to show... some 'wit okes' can put down those chillies with their bunnies!

Open Happiness with the Mother-In-Law of All Bunny Chows

08 July 2009

Things are getting rather chilly at this time of the year on the East Coast but we ain't talking about the weather!

Coca-Cola is once again running the Bunny Chow Barometer and is hot on the heels of KZN's top 10 bunny chow outlets. The competition which forms part of the mid-year 'Celebrate Durban' festivities, is now in it's 6th year running and the response from participating outlets continues to heat up as the people of KZN are rather passionate about where they get their bunny chows. The outcome of the competition is also a helpful guideline for visitors to Durban who can then confidently experience the city's unique culinary secret.

The closing date for competition entries was 26 June and the judges are now out there to score the store, seeking out the 30 semi-finalists, focussing on taste, size, price, vibe, location and cleanliness. The top 30 will be subject to another round of scrutiny by the judges to see who makes it into the top 10. As with all previous years, there will be a fun day to be held at 'Lugs' (Blue Lagoon) on 6 September 2009, where a celebrity panel will make the final decision on who's cookin'. The public will be able to sample fare from the 10 finalists to make up their own minds about who serves the best bunny while enjoying some family entertainment. QuarterBunny.co.za will also be there to enjoy the feast!

In addition there is also a consumer promotion that is running at participating outlets. On purchasing a 'Bunny & Coke' COMBO consumers will receive a scratch card with lots of instant prizes up for grabs. This promotion runs from June till 31 August 2009.

For further details on the competition contact an ABI account manager on 031 508 3100.

Hungry? Check out the QuarterBunny® Shack, down at the Mr Price Pro in Ballito this year. We will be serving up delicious, authentic Durban bunny chows, as well as samoosas, breyanis, curries and rotis.

Cappuccinos, Caffè Lattes & Espressos will also be on sale.

The QuarterBunny® website is also being launched at the beach festival. It promises to be a really fun website where passionate bunny lovin' Activate staff members rate their favourite bunny hot spots with fun pics and quirky comments.

Born out of a genuine passion for bunny chows and spearheaded by Integrated brand agency, Activate, the website is expected to be a hit with both locals and tourists. It’s about getting the word out there (spillin' the beans!) that bunny chows in Durban are an institution on their own.
